Antique School Writing Slate – Double-Sided Natural Stone with Wooden Frame
Antique School Writing Slate – Double-Sided Natural Stone with Wooden Frame – c.1890–1930
Description
A charming piece of schoolroom history, this traditional double-sided writing slate offers a wonderful glimpse into the everyday education of children during the late Victorian, Edwardian and early 20th-century periods.
Measuring approximately 30cm x 21cm, the slate features two solid natural stone writing surfaces surrounded by a beautifully aged wooden frame with gently rounded corners and traditional nailed construction.
Both sides display the scratches, marks and signs of repeated use accumulated over many years, while the wooden frame has developed a lovely warm patina. These authentic signs of age and use give the piece its character and historical appeal.
Before exercise books and paper became commonplace in classrooms, generations of schoolchildren used individual slates to practise their handwriting, spelling and arithmetic. Writing was carried out using a slate pencil, with mistakes simply wiped away so the slate could be used again.
An economical and reusable teaching aid, the humble school slate was once an essential part of everyday classroom life.
Today, these surviving examples are wonderful reminders of a very different approach to education.
Why We Love It
There is something rather special about an object that may have helped generations of children learn their first letters and numbers.
We particularly love the wonderfully worn wooden frame and the countless fine scratches across the stone surfaces. Each mark hints at the slate's working life and the hands that once held it.
A lovely collectible for anyone interested in educational history, Victorian and Edwardian schoolrooms, or the social history of everyday objects.
It would also make a charming decorative addition to a vintage-inspired interior, study or home office.

This is an original old writing slate showing considerable signs of age and use.
Both stone surfaces display numerous scratches, scuffs, chalk traces and surface marks consistent with years of writing and erasing. The wooden frame has an attractive aged patina, with areas of discolouration, rubbing, small marks and general wear.
No obvious major cracks are visible across the stone surfaces in the photographs.
The slate has not been restored and retains its wonderfully timeworn appearance.
Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
A Little Piece of History
The traditional school writing slate played an important role in education throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Durable, reusable and inexpensive, it allowed children to practise their lessons repeatedly without the cost of paper.
The familiar expression "wipe the slate clean" is closely associated with the practice of erasing the surface and beginning again.
A simple everyday object with a fascinating connection to the history of childhood and education.
Please Note: This is a genuine old item with age-related wear and imperfections. Our descriptions are prepared carefully and to the best of our knowledge. Colours may vary slightly between screens, and our photographs are not digitally enhanced to conceal condition issues.
