Believed to originate from Bali, Indonesia, this distinctive hat takes its inspiration from the traditional caping, a conical sun hat long associated with rural life and rice cultivation across Southeast Asia.

What makes this particular example so captivating is its wonderfully expressive decoration. Across its woven surface, a colourful cast of characters appears amongst intricate floral motifs, swirling patterns and ornamental borders, all painted in rich shades of terracotta, golden yellow, red, black and blue.

The figures are reminiscent of those found in traditional Balinese wayang storytelling, an artistic tradition closely associated with the ancient Hindu epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Traditional Craftsmanship

The hat has been skilfully constructed from interwoven natural fibres, believed to be bamboo, with a substantial reinforced outer rim secured by bright yellow bindings.

Its underside reveals the attractive woven construction, complete with a separate circular head support and white elastic fastening.

The exterior has been hand-painted directly onto the woven surface and finished with a glossy protective coating, giving the colours a lovely depth and richness.

A small loop attached to the rim makes it particularly suitable for hanging as an unusual piece of decorative wall art.

A Little History

The traditional Indonesian caping was designed to provide shade and protection from the tropical sun, particularly for agricultural workers tending rice fields.

Over time, these practical hats also became decorative objects, with artisans transforming their woven surfaces into colourful canvases celebrating local culture, mythology and traditional artistic styles.

Painted Balinese hats featuring characters inspired by wayang storytelling were also produced for the island's tourist and handicraft markets during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

This example is believed to date from that period, although its precise age and place of manufacture have not been established.

Condition

Good vintage decorative condition, with signs of age, handling and previous use.

There is some surface wear, minor scuffing and discolouration to the painted finish, together with slight irregularities and wear to the woven fibres and coloured rim bindings. Some threads show fraying, and the crown displays minor wear.

The underside retains its woven head support and white elastic fastening. A hanging loop is also attached to the rim.

These details are consistent with a pre-owned handcrafted item and contribute to its individual character.
